Petrol and Diesel Engine rebuild process from Southern Engine Services

Guide to prices

The engine is stripped by removing all ancillary parts, starter, alternator, clutch, flywheel etc. The rocker cover box is then removed and any rocker gear or camshaft assembly. The first part of the engine fix!

The cylinder head bolts are then removed and the cylinder head is lifted off the engine block. All bolts and parts placed in special containers readied for the cleaning hot tank. The engine is then inverted and the engine sump is removed. The engines front seal and rear oil seals and housing are removed.

The engines oil pump and balance shaft assemblies are removed, followed by the engines connecting rod nuts/bolts. The con rods and pistons are removed from the engine block and the con rod caps and nuts/bolts refitted. The engines main bearing caps are then removed and the crankshaft is lifted out. All gaskets and oil seals are removed before cleaning. The engine is now stripped and ready for cleaning. When removed after several hours cleaning each component is taken to the department in which it will be machined.

Crankshaft will be visually inspected the checked with micrometers to ensure it can be machined. The crankshaft will then be machined to the minimum undersize required to make it perfect to within 1000 inch. Crank is checked for taper and ovality. Con rods are checked for size on the big ends and small ends sometimes known as little ends are replaced if of the bushed type.

Engine block is rebored to the first oversize required .5mm or 1mm. The engine block on some models are refaced all the time as is the case of the MGB engine. Others are checked at the time of reboring the block

Cylinder head is cleaned again then the valves and springs are removed. The cylinder head is pressure tested. The cylinder head face is skimmed/refaced.

The valve seats are re`cut along with the valves. Valves showing any extreme wear or burnt will be replaced. The cylinder head is then cleaned again before assembly.

All engine parts are again cleaned before assembly in the hot tank then hand blown dry with 150psi air pressure. Once cleaned they are placed on a pre prepared building bench.

The engine is assembling as per the stripping process but in reverse. The engine is built with new main and big end bearings. New pistons complete with Piston rings. All new gaskets and oil seals. Oil pump or oil pump gears. Timing chain and timing chain tensioner as required. New head bolts if of the stretch type.
